Chapter 2

Constantine ran, blurring with the pissed off Mer at his side. She ought to be kissing his feet in thanks that he'd saved her from the merciless demons. They would have used her for sport, tearing into her virginity like starved prisoners-of-war before a feast of epic proportions.

Con did not look at why it was important that he save her. She was full of herself and not useful for anything but her ability to fuck, as far as Con saw things. Nevertheless, his dollop of Druid blood had utterly prevented him from throwing her to the wolves.

Or demons, as it were.

He gave a short cackle, his guts still in the process of healing from the treatment by that demon wretch, Brolach. Yet, for all Brolach's cleverness he'd revealed himself to save a breeder. The pussy. Constantine could never imagine a time when he would be willing to reveal such a monumental secret simply to protect a female.

No.

He jerked Ember to him ruthlessly and she cried out, “Please, you are hurting me, vampire!” Her platinum hair became bound up in their twined hands and he pulled her against him by the silken strands, the pearl-like beads woven cleverly into the luxury of it. The priceless seed pods of their healing plants were hidden in plain sight.

Her blazing garnet eyes caught his and her terror was clear. Con shook her, his hardened cock pressing between her legs and aching to take her but he held back as she swallowed hard.

“You saved me from the demons only to rape me now?” she asked tremulously. He looked down at her hand wrapped against his forearm, the luminescent skin softly shining against his pale vampire flesh. He sucked in a breath and heaved her away from himself.

Ember stumbled backward and righted herself, just barely. They faced each other, both their chests heaving.

“No,” Constantine said shortly. “I will not rape you. It was your brother that would have the whole of the Mer take a turn at your mermaid twat, not I,” Con stated with ruthless clarity. His need to exonerate himself superseded any need to spare her feelings.

Constantine watched as her delicate face crumpled. She put a shaky wrist to her mouth to muffle the sobs.

It squeezed something inside Constantine to hear her sadness.

He hated her weakness.

He hated the need that she'd awoken inside him to fuck her. Protect her.

It made him loathe her and himself. He turned away from her soft sobbing in disgust.

A noise made him perk up his ears. He blurred to Ember, their spat and fucking emotional bullshit forgotten. He covered her soft mouth and closed his eyes against the desire to kiss it as a familiar smell wound its way into his senses.

Druid.

Many of the enemy.

He put Ember behind his body as the first of the unexpected vampires came upon him.

But for once, Con had been quite wrong. For it was not Druids but those of the Faction. His old cohorts had found him.

Constantine was woefully outnumbered and could no longer lie to himself.
